Here are a couple of pictures of the Mescal Bean (Sophora secundiflora) in bloom. They have beautiful purple flowers. The green leaves make the purple pop!

I took these pictures out at Ethel M’s Chocolate Factory on about March 4, 2014. None of the cactus were blooming, but the Mescal beans still gave us some color.

They are awfully pretty considering the produce deadly seeds.

In case you were wondering, the Mescal Beans are deadly. Way back when, the Indians use to take a small piece of the bean, crush it and ingest it. It was said to give them “insight”. Hmmm, insight to the afterlife if they weren’t careful.

Some people think Mescal Beans are hallucinogenic. NO! They will however give you heart palpitations, muscle paralysis and the uncontrollable shits. Sounds like fun, eh?

So, enjoy the flowers and leave the seeds alone!
